Scalp Pigmentation vs Scalp Micropigmentation — What's the Difference?

All the Terms — What Each One Means

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP). The standard clinical term. The procedure that deposits micro-dots of pigment into the upper dermis of the scalp to replicate hair follicles. This is the correct, widely recognized name used by professionals.
Scalp pigmentation. Shorthand for scalp micropigmentation. Same procedure. The word "micro" is simply dropped. Common in casual conversation and online searches.
Hair tattoo. A colloquial term, especially popular among younger clients. Describes the SMP procedure in plain language — a tattoo-like technique applied to the scalp to simulate hair. Microdot pigmentation. Another variation describing the same procedure. Emphasizes the micro-scale of each pigment deposit.
Scalp microblading. This one is different. Microblading uses a handheld blade to create hair strokes — it is primarily a brow technique. True scalp microblading is rare and not widely practiced. Most providers who use this term are actually performing SMP. If you see "scalp microblading" offered, clarify with the provider exactly what technique they use.
Scalp tattooing. General term describing any tattooing of the scalp. Can refer to SMP specifically or to decorative scalp tattoos. In the context of hair loss, scalp tattooing almost always means SMP.
Scalp camo / scalp inking. Less common terms used by some providers. Same procedure.

Hair transplant surgery. A surgical procedure that moves real hair follicles from a donor area to the recipient area. Actual hair growth — not a visual simulation. Requires surgery, recovery, and months of waiting for results.
